Are Bridal Shower Gifts really necessary?

Yes, if you are invited to a bridal shower you are expected to bring a gift.  Opening the bridal gifts in the main event and it will look bad if you turn up without one. This doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune however, homemade gifts are sometimes better than expensive ones. 

 There are some great bridal shower gift traditions to adhere to.  The first gift the bride opens should also be the one she uses first, so if you’ve given her champagne glasses, make sure your present is at the front of the queue! According to tradition, the giver of the third gift opened by the bride will be the first to have children, and if the Maid of Honor makes a bouquet from the present ribbons to be thrown at the wedding rehearsal, the catcher will be the next to get married.

A special “comfy” outfit to use before the wedding is an excellent idea too. For the wedding itself, find out from the Maid of Honor what the bride already has and use that as a guide.  Great bridal gifts include a handbag, hair comb or accessories, a mirror or compact to use on the day, or a pretty piece of jewelry incorporating ‘something blue’.

Buy something for the honeymoon

If you know where the couple is going on their honeymoon, this can provide inspiration for great bridal shower gifts.  Look for his and hers beach towels, a guide book, or even a coffee table book with photographs of the honeymoon location. Perhaps you could pay for a day’s excursion during the honeymoon, but you will need to know which travel agent they have used to be able to book this. 

Girly lingerie for the honeymoon is the ultimate bridal shower gift but don’t get anything too raunchy, remember her mother and grandmother might be in the room. Save really sexy underwear or sex toys for the bachelorette party

Buy something for married life

The couple will probably get all the domestic wedding gifts they need from their wedding gift registry, so if you are going down this route, try to get bridal gifts that are a little tongue in cheek, or comical, such as a pink polka dot apron and oven glove set, or a 1950s style guide book on being a good housewife. Alternatively you could get something related to the wedding gift you have bought, for example if you have bought linen table cloths, look for some beautiful silk placemats or a table runner.

Dollar Stores: From glass vases, frames, candles, and even humorous gifts your local dollar store is a great source for getting the prizes you need for a shower.

Bookstores: You can find all kinds of find little items in a bookstore. Calendars, frames, bookmarks, card sets, word games could all be perfect for just what you are looking for. Don’t forget to checkout the promotional tables, they’re full of great items at great prices.

Liquor Stores:  No, you don’t have to spend the money to buy full bottles of wine. Check out the small bottles of liqueurs and liquor for a unique prize.  Perfect is you’re planning a wine theme shower.

Warehouse Clubs: Buying in bulk will obviously save you money on anything but what about buying a bulk package of hair care or beauty products? Gift baskets make a great prize too, use as is or break it apart and use each piece in the basket individually.

Candy Stores: Shop these for candy in bulk and create your own custom candy bags to coordinate with a color theme. Don’t forget about that Bride’s favorite candy. That could be a game and prize in itself.

Wedding Favor Sites: Any favor you would buy for a bridal shower makes the a perfect prize for a shower game. Favors are inexpensive and if you’re buying favors for the shower include a few extra pieces for use as gifts so you won’t have to pay any additional shipping charges.

It’s no secret that planning a wedding is hard, and sometimes stressful, work. There’s the location to think about. The reception. The food. The dress. The list goes on and on.

In fact, it can get so stressful that the bride and wedding party can forget that the events leading up to the Big Day are supposed to be fun! That’s why throwing a bridal shower for that bride in your life is a great way to help the bride and wedding party relax and have fun.

A bridal shower is usually thrown by the bride’s maid of honor. It usually consists of an afternoon where female friends and family of the bride gather for food, drinks, gifts and fun. The main draw of the shower (for the bride at least) is the gift giving part. However, another draw of the bridal shower can be the fun bridal shower games!

But, how many fun bridal shower games do you know? If the answer is none, don’t fret.

  • How Well Do You Know the Bride – This game centers on the most important person at the shower: the bride! To play, first compile a list of at least ten questions about the bride – the more challenging, the better. Then pass out paper and pens to each attendee. The person who answers the most questions correctly wins a small prize (that you decide on – maybe something as simple as a picture frame or candle.)
  • Bridal Shower Bingo – This game works just like the traditional bingo game, but you replace the numbers with things commonly found around weddings – words like dress, flowers, presents, etc. To set it up, simply draw a bingo square on a sheet of paper (or you can design one on a computer. Next, make the bingo caller’s word set. The first person to call “bingo” during the bridal shower bingo game wins a fun prize.
  • What’s in Your Purse? – Before the shower, compile a list of 20 things commonly found in a woman’s purse. Assign a point value to each item – the more uncommon the item, the more points. For example, a coin purse would receive one point, but a guest with a nail file would receive three points. Then, during the game, ask guests to tally up their purse “point value.” The guest with the most points wins a prize.

As you can see, there’s no shortage of fun bridal shower games you can play with the bride-to-be and her guests. The only limit?
